We’d all like to be mastering public speaking and improve our public speaking confidence, wouldn’t we?

• What is the specific purpose?
• How long is your presentation slot?
• Who is the audience?
• How do you know the audience?
• What are the audience expecting?
• What do the audience want?
• How well do the audience know the subject you are presenting on?
• What do you want the audience to do after the presentation?
• What will determine whether the presentation is a success?
• How will you determine whether the presentation was a success?
• What do you want the audience to go away with once you have finished?
• What is the best format to get your message across?
• What visual aids/props will you be using? Are they appropriate?
• Have you visited where you will be presenting?
• Have you requested a certain room or layout?

How to get on in life by mastering public speaking

It doesn’t matter what you do, whether you are a business person or a student you should start mastering public speaking. Nor does it make any difference whether you are a work from home mom or a pensioner needing to make a bit of money to supplement a meager pension. There is one underlying skill you have to have. You have to know how to sell.

All life is one big selling campaign.

There is always a trade happening. One person offers something that another person might accept or reject.

Everybody needs to be able to sell.

Sometimes the selling process is hidden and you don’t recognise it to be that.

Let me give you an example.

The work at home mom makes cookies and fudge which she sells at school through the tuck shop or cafeteria. For her this is not a sell situation. She knows the head teacher because it’s her husband, her kids go to school there, she is friends with the school receptionist. She pitches up with her basket of lovely goodies and they are sold for her, no questions asked.

You might think there was no selling involved. Not so. She has to sell the concept to her husband, the receptionist must like her, the person working the tuck shop or school canteen has to agree that cookies are not unhealthy for the kids. If they don’t, regardless of the husband being the head teacher the cookies just won’t get sold.

Here’s another example.

You are a salaried employee. You push paper all day. You don’t have to sell. Yes you do. You sell every day. The first time you sell is when you sell yourself for the job. Then you sell yourself every day by pushing that paper efficiently. You are selling yourself to a boss every day to reassure him that you are a worthy member of staff.

Do you come in late to work every morning? You are losing a sale. Yourself as a staff member. Guess on whose desk that pink slip will land.

So every thing you do is a sales situation. You build a good relationship with a coworker, you are selling yourself as a good team member. You are friendly to a customer even though you are not in the sales department, maybe you are the receptionist, you are selling the company to the customer.

What is the one thing that is your biggest asset in selling yourself, your product or service, possibly a business venture or just brand you?

It is being able to speak out clearly, enthusiastically, with passion and with regard to your audience. As much as you might think that public speaking is only standing on a stage and delivering a fabulous talk to a bunch of people, this is not where it ends.

Your public speaking skills come in to play every day of your life as you sell yourself to other people. It doesn’t matter who you are selling yourself to and what for. It could even just be getting your kids to listen to you and clean their rooms.

Having awesome public speaking skills will help you with every situation in your life. It will give you confidence and the skills to handle anything that crops up as you go about your life, so start mastering public speaking now.
