Understanding the horror of public speaking

Fear of public speaking is just one of a group of anxiety related grievances known as social fear but it is perhaps the one that is affecting most of the people.

The way our bodies react to these eventualities comes from signals in the brain, causing physical indicators including : dry mouth - sweating - shaking - blushing – quivering.

In more extraordinary cases, a significant panic fit can occur, where an overpowering sense of tension takes over.

Controlling your nerves.

The most important thing that you have to remember is that you aren't alone if you have a real fear of public talking.

There are few of us who feel comfortable about getting up on a stage or chatting in front of a gang of people we don’t know.

But with training, you can learn how to use your nerves in a positive way. Breathing and relaxation are gigantic factors in dealing with your anxiousness about public speaking, and learning the best way to use your nerves to your benefit can regularly be the first step in thrashing the fear.

Preparation.

Using the time leading up to a public talking event is a good way to help you improve your confidence.

Having answers to the following questions will help you prepare and improve your public speaking confidence:

• Why are you being asked to present?
• What are you being asked to present?
• What do you want to present?
• What is the specific purpose?
• How long is your presentation slot?
• Who is the audience?
• How do you know the audience?
• What are the audience expecting?
• What do the audience want?
• How well do the audience know the subject you are presenting on?
• What do you want the audience to do after the presentation?
• What will determine whether the presentation is a success?
• How will you determine whether the presentation was a success?
• What do you want the audience to go away with once you have finished?
• What is the best format to get your message across?
• What visual aids/props will you be using? Are they appropriate?
• Have you visited where you will be presenting?
• Have you requested a certain room or layout?
